Surf Life Saving GB was again the host of this year’s European Inshore Rescue Boat Champs on Sunday 2nd October in Bournemouth on the south coast of England. The official opening ceremony was attended by The Worshipful The Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Chris Rochester and President of the International Life Saving Federation of Europe, Dr Klaus Wilkens who gave a stirring address and kindly closed the championships for us at the end of the day.

As temperatures reached a balmy 27 degrees Celsius, SLSGB welcomed over 130 competitors in 15 teams from throughout Europe. In addition to the British teams, SLSGB thanks DLRG-Friedberg-Bad Nauheim, DLRG-Kleve, Latvia, Poland and Belgium-Brasschaat for making the trip to the UK to be part of a superb day of competition.

The competition was fierce with excellent racing skill displayed throughout the championships coupled with first-rate sportsmanship. The overall trophy was hotly contested but congratulations to reigning champions Saunton Sands Surf Life Saving Club from Southwest England who took 1st place!

Chief Referee, Adam Wooler said “we were all proud to be associated with the best ever IRB Championship weekend. The standard of competition was extremely high, matched by the standard of officiating. It bodes well for the continued development of IRB Sport.”

Well done to all competitors for giving us a brilliant display of high speed rescue.
