ILSE Member Croatian Red Cross informs about the current situation in Croatia:

Since Sunday, 14 May 2023 many parts of Croatia have been affected by excessive rain which caused flooding in several counties – Zadar, Split-Dalmatia, Sisak-Moslavina, Karlovac, Zagreb, Krapina-Zagorje, Virovitica-Podravina, Bjelovar-Bilogora, Varaždin, and Međimurje. In several additional counties, rain has caused minor problems but the situation has been generally under control. While the situation has improved in some of the counties during the last 24 hours, Sisak-Moslavina and Karlovac County which have been badly affected are still under threat of even worse consequences. Unfavourable weather forecast for the next days, makes it difficult to predict how the situation will evolve. Landslides are possible.

Water has been polluted in the areas of Hrvatska Kostajnica and cannot be used for drinking. On Thursday, 18 May riverbank in Sisak partially broke and repairs are being made to strengthen the so-called box-barries.

According to the estimations, some 100,000 people have been affected all over Croatia.

Croatian Red Cross response

Municipal, city and county branches of the Croatian Red Cross in the affected areas have been participating in the work of the Crisis Response bodies and coordinating with all the stakeholders their response activities.

Croatian Red Cross local branches have been actively participating in the preventive measures undertaken by the civil protection operational forces in Croatia, at the same time responding to the needs of the affected population.

Depending on the needs of the affected population local branches in all the affected areas deliver food, water, and medicines.

Water Rescue Teams

Water Rescue Teams of the Croatian Red Cross have been active in the areas of Gračac, Sisak and Hrvatska Kostajnica cut off by water, where they have been delivering food, water, and medicines and helping with evacuation of patients. This kind of help involving the use of boats is crucial in situations when people cannot be reached via roads.

In Sisak-Moslavina Water Rescue Teams has been delivering food and water to Kuljani, Unčani, Mala Gorica, Stari Brod and Letovanić. From Friday, 19 May the team that has been active in the area of Gračac and delivering food and water in Grab, Srb and Kokirna will end with its activities since all previously cut-off areas can now be reached via road. The Teams will continue to deliver food and water in the areas of Sisak and Hrvatska Kostajnica.
